Pool liner leak detection and repair in La Mirada

A vinyl liner is the waterproof envelope inside a steel or polymer pool wall, and it does not crack the way plaster does. It tears, degrades at the seams, or fails at the holes where fittings pass through it. Because the liner is flexible and often patterned, a small hole or a seam separation is nearly invisible in normal light. Finding it without draining the pool requires dye, and fixing it depends on where it is and how far the liner has aged.

Seams, fittings, and surface damage

A vinyl liner has two kinds of seams: factory seams welded under controlled conditions, and field seams made on site during installation. The field seams at the corners and floor transitions are under the most stress as the liner fills and as it expands and contracts with temperature. A fitting, the skimmer face plate, the return fittings, and the main drain all require the liner to be cut, and the hole is sealed by a gasket sandwiched between two faceplates. When that gasket hardens, the liner pulls away from it and water finds the gap. Surface tears, meanwhile, come from sharp objects, automated cleaners that have worn through, or a liner that has become brittle with age and UV.

Dye tracing in place

We find a liner leak without draining by using dye. A small amount of dye released near a suspected seam or fitting shows which direction the current is moving: toward a hole or away. At a leak the dye is drawn in, marking the exact point. We work systematically from the fittings to the floor seams to the wall field seams. A hole found this way is repaired in place with an underwater patch, a vinyl-to-vinyl adhesive applied without removing water, which is almost always less disruptive and less expensive than a drain and refill.

Thickness and age

When a patch is not the answer

Vinyl liners come in thicknesses from 20 to 30 mil, and thicker liners last longer and resist tears better. A liner past its service life becomes brittle and bleached, and a patch on a brittle liner is a temporary fix that holds for a season. At that point, and when there are multiple small holes across the floor or field seams pulling apart in several places, a liner replacement is the honest recommendation rather than a patch campaign. Patch, fitting repair, or replacement

An underwater patch or a fitting gasket replacement is the low end, a contained repair done in the pool. A liner replacement is the larger project, and cost scales with pool size and liner thickness. La Mirada's warm climate keeps liners out of freeze stress, which helps longevity, but strong UV and pool chemicals take their toll, particularly if the water chemistry has run out of range for long periods.
